onbeforeunload does not work like you think it does. You can return a string from the handler, which will prompt a messsage, or undefined which will do nothing.

window.onbeforeunload = goodbye;

functiongoodbye(e) {
    if (!validNavigation) {
        return leave_message;
    } else {
        returnundefined;
    }
}
